Rejoice, fans of gay pirate TV: Our Flag Means Death is coming back for a second season.
The news officially comes from HBO Max’s Twitter account, which announced “Season 2 is officially setting sail. #OurFlagMeansDeath.” It is accompanied by a small video from early on in the show’s first season of the cast celebrating an escape from the Spanish armada. It’s funnier in context.

Our Flag Means Death is a romantic comedy about real-life pirate Stede Bonnet, a nobleman who one day decided he would rather live a life of swashbuckling and piracy on the high seas. In the show, he eventually meets the infamous Blackbeard played by Taika Waititi, and the two quickly become close. The season ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, with neither Stede nor Blackbeard being exactly happy with the way things are.
The first season of the show was a popular streaming success for HBO. Despite trending consistently on social media and the aforementioned cliffhanger, the series was not immediately renewed for a second season. For whatever reason, HBO either had not decided or wished to stay quiet about a renewal until today, when they tweeted the above. Even show creator David Jenkins told the Los Angeles times that he wasn’t clear why it wasn’t being renewed.
We don’t want to give away any more spoilers in case you have yet to watch the first season of the show, so go ahead and do that. There’s a reason it’s a very well-loved show. We also recently wrote three video game series you might like if you enjoyed Our Flag Means Death, but the reverse is true, too. If you really liked those video games, you might like the show. Heck, Stede and Blackbeard are in Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag to begin with!
No date has been given for Our Flag Means Death season two, but presumably it will once again air on HBO.
